Tales from the Four Colour Closet - Batwoman: A Step in the Right Direction

So, last week’s column saw me looking at Stormwatch #1, finding myself left wanting with the obvious lack of mention of Apollo and Midnighter’s sexuality, or in fact any way of differentiating them from Superman and Batman in their now shared universe; and also, looking briefly at DC’s claims of improving diversity.
Then, last Wednesday, DC finally released Batwoman #1. So, today’s column is very much a sequel to last week’s, as we again delve into DC’s diversification claims, and look at somewhere DC are actually doing it right.
Ultimatum Teaser - Is it too little, too late?
This teaser to Ultimatum by Marvel Comics has been released and doesn't it look...well...brooding. I wanted to say awesome (Is that Thor's Hammer?!), especially as the art by Finch is stunning and up to his usual calibre, but there's not a lot to go on. I'm guessing it's gonna be some mad-capped scheme by Magneto to change the Ultimate universe in some dramatic shake-up of continuity that could quite possibly be reversed if it doesn't work out. Did that sound bitter? Sorry, but this cross-over really has to work for me or this could be the last comic based in Marvel's Ultimate Universe I buy.
The Ultimate Universe was launched in 2000 as an entry point into Marvel comics for new readers, a place they could jump onto a series from #1. Old stories were re-told from a more modern perspective, incorporating advances in known sciences and current pop culture. The first title available at launch was Ultimate Spider-Man by Brian Michael Bendis and has become a huge success, boosting Bendis to Golden Boy at Marvel. Since then we've had Ultimate X-Men, The Ultimates, Ultimate Fantastic Four, Ultimate Iron Man and several random Ultimate mini-series.
