Avengers: X-Sanction - Is Cable the New RULK?!

by Gavin Jones Email

BIG GUN! BIG GUN! BIG GUN!

With the recent reveal that Cable will be returning after 'dying' during X-Men event, Second Coming, we now have some more information about the direction that his return will take. It seems that Cable will be taking on The Avengers in an attempt to safeguard his 'daughter', Hope, and her future prosperity. With this mini-series being written by man of many lives, Jeph Loeb and drawn by fan favourite Ed McGuinness I pose the question; Is Cable the new RULK?

Cable Reborn...Again!

by Gavin Jones Email

This man is all arm

Whilst SDCC '11 was going on I was trying to stay out of it, I wasn't there, we had no Sidekicks there so I decided not to report much news from the show. If I'm being honest I was having a bit of a sulk, plus SDCC news always makes good content for Secrets and Lies on The Sidekickcast. There was one bit of news that passed me by that I should've reported on, as I promised I would here, Cable was not on the list, so that's an epic fail by me.

Mike's Library Hot Picks: Superman/Batman

by mikeybumchin Email

Sidekick, sidekick, sidekick, Ho!!!!!!, Sidekickcast is on the move, Sidekickcast is loose, feel the strange magic, hear the roar, sidekick cast is loose, sidekick, sidekick sidekick, sidekickcast, sidekick, sidekick sidekick, sidekickcast, sidekick, sidekick sidekick, sidekickcast

Sidekick, ho!!

What?! I couldn’t find another one with speaking in it. So, the reviews are shifting back to the DC universe and it’s all about the cape and the cowl. This week’s Hot Picks will focus entirely on one series, I’ll review two of the books and make recommendations for other books that are available from (Cardiff) Library.

Superman/Batman started back in 2003 (can’t believe its been going that long) and was given to Jeph Loeb (Hulk, Ulitmatum, Ultimate Avengers). At the time he was working with industry favourite Ed McGuinness, although later stories have featured art by a whole range of other artists, and similarly writing duties have also frequently changed.

Somewhere in the dark and nasty regions, where nobody goes, stands an ancient castle. Deep within this dank, and uninviting place, lives Bumchin “Allo!”, overworked servant of "the thing upstairs" “Bumchin! Write a Review!” But that's nothing, compared to the horrors that lurk beneath the trap door, for there is always something down there, in the dark, waiting to come out...(usually its Dan)

So this week I’ve decided to review some of the Ultimate storylines from Marvel. I thought it was appropriate with all the news surrounding the “Death of (Ultimate) Spider-man”.

Anime Invasion of the Marvel U!

by @Neon_Lynx Email

Bones posted earlier with some footage from the X-Men Anime and it got me pretty excited.

So I did a little digging and discovered that there are 3 other Marvel Anime projects in the works! It seems this is all old news but then, since I've been tirelessly blogging about video games for you lot, I've kind of had my finger off the pulse. In fact, the last time I looked at animation was waaaaaay back here!

Ladies and gentlemen... may I present to you, for your viewing pleasure, Iron Man Anime and Wolverine Anime. Of course there's a Wolverine Anime...

by Gavin Jones Email

Open my cloak and I'll show you my dagger

It would seem that Jeph Loeb has been a busy boy already in his new role as head of Marvel TV with news coming from THR that we can not only expect a Hulk TV show but also a Cloak and Dagger series in the near futue.

The $@*! I find interesting from NYCC 2010

by Gavin Jones Email

As you know, here on the Sidekick blog we try to keep abreast of all the latest news and gossip in the comic book and geek world but being locked into good ol’ Blighty means sometimes it takes a little while to filter through and also I only tend to put the shit that I find interesting. I honestly can’t remember where each piece of information came from as a lot of it was through Twitter and related sources at the con but I know some of it definitely came from Bleeding Cool, MTV Splash Page and CBR. So here you go, the shit I find interesting from NYCC 2010:

The Many Lives of Jeph Loeb: Marvel's New EVP of Television

by Gavin Jones Email

Jeph Loeb: New EVP of Television

Anybody that has read this blog or listened to The Sidekickcast will know I have an odd relationship with Jeph Loeb, no not like that, get your minds out of the gutter! I love his work, I hate his work, then I love it again, then he takes over The Ultimates and I'm back to hating. So now the man I love to hate but hate to love has got a new job as Marvel Entertainment's EVP of Television. The man has form, he co-wrote Teen Wolf, Commando(?), good(ish) episodes of Smallville, Lost, Heroes, Batman: The Long Halloween (my personal favourite), Batman: Hush and more recently his audacious run on Hulk. He also famously got fired from Heroes when things started to go bad, massacred his run on The Ultiumates, screwed up the Ultimatum, gone crazytown on Ultimate X and then there's that run on Hulk!

Love him or hate him, the man has got something and it'll be interesting to see what he can bring to Marvel's Televison wing, especailly as the press release (below) states he'll be looking after their live action TV work. What live action TV work would that be then?

From Heroes to Zeroes

by Gavin Jones Email

Link: http://www.spinoffonline.com/2010/05/14/its-official-nbc-cancels-heroes/

So it's official Heroes is no more. Such a shame as it started off so well, with such promise, it was it's very own pop cultural phenomenom. It came along just at the right time, people were starting to pay more attention to comics due to the movie adaptations and with it's high production values and soap opera elements Heroes was the link between the movies and comic books, unfortunately though never quite living up to the promise of either. The show lost it's zing after season 2, never quite recovering from the writer's strike that cut the season short.

Jim Lee's Heroes Montage

So who do we blame for this testament to televisual trash? I'm tepted to blame Jeph Loeb, he was of course spetacularly fired from the series by NBC after ratings took a nose dive and I have my own issues with the quality of Loeb's recent comic book work. But it's unfair to lay the blame solely on one man, or even two if you include his fellow sackee Jesse Alexander, no the problem was something more endemic to this particular show. The very things that made the show a success are also the things that brought it to it's knees, high production values, large ensemble casts, the best (and most expensive) writers and a lack of consistent direction and planning of character development. Lessons should and will be learnt by those that hand the world in the palm of their hands and pissed it all away.
