Running an independent comic book publisher is a hard business. It takes time, determination and some very deep pockets. You also have to choose your titles very carefully and keep to just a few at first until you're up on your feet because you really need to get behind the ones you've got. And last but not least you need to look after the people, your editors, letterers, writers, artists, colourists, admin, the lad that makes the tea, because these people are your company without them there is nothing.
It's a shame Crawford Coutts; managing director and editor in chief of Insomnia Publishing didn't really do any of these things as now he's got dick all. Some months ago I talked about the problems Insomnia were having and I wished everyone there the best of luck, well it seems that wasn't enough as Mr Couts has filed with UK Companies House that Insomnia have ceased trading. These things happen, things don't work out. How you behave in situations like this allows your true character to show through. You should at least be able to man up, keep everyone concerned fully informed and take it all on the chin. Or like Mr Couts, you could not tell anyone, do a runner and never be heard of again. Maybe he's gone looking for that fabled money tree he seemed so sure existed or maybe he's chilling with Lord Lucan on a desert island somewhere. Wherever he is I hope he knows that he's let a lot of good people down, just by not being upfront and honest, it's not a hard thing to do. My best wishes and hopes go out to all those left in limbo by these developments and I really do hope to see some of those books that almost made it, at another home that will treat them with the respect they deserve.
BICS 2009 Interviews - Burke & Hare creative team Martin Conaghan and Will Pickering

Whilst at the British International Comics Show 2009 (BICS 09) this weekend I was lucky enough to sit down with Martin Conaghan and Will Pickering; writer and artist respectively of graphic novel Burke and Hare from Insomnia Publications' new Vigil historical imprint. The book tells the ghoulish true story of serial killers William Burke and William Hare in early 19th century Edinburgh.
During the interview I was truly blown away by the level of enthusiasm both creators had for the story of Burke and Hare, not just the story everyone knows but the real truth behind the murders and their historical significance. These guys have lived and breathed this story and it shows in every part of this chilling and macabre production.
