DC New 52 Collected: A Book To Die For?

So you know all those DC relaunch titles? All the number one issues are going to be collected into one hardback volume acting like a bible for the New 52 and the DC Universe in general.
Green Lantern #1 Cover and the rest of the New Lantern Books

We've already seen Justice League #1 and yesterday a whole host of other covers but today brings possibly one of the bigger titles given Green Lantern's rise to prominence under Geoff Johns. Judging from this first cover, it looks as though the Green Lantern is rising from the grave but surely not, haven't we already been through this? I say The Green Lantern, rather than Hal Jordan because really we have no confirmation that he will be our Green Lantern...but he probably will be.
So what do the The Source have to say about it?
GREEN LANTERN #1
This fall, Geoff Johns reunites with artists Doug Mahnke and Christian Alamy, as the series begins anew with GREEN LANTERN #1 with cover by Ivan Reis and Joe Prado. Together they will continue to thrill readers and expand the Green Lantern mythos.
Well that tells us absolutely nothing, thanks, but what about the rest of the Lantern titles? (continue past the jump for the rest of the Lantern titles)

We saw the full cover to Geoff Johns and Jim Lee's JUSTICE LEAGUE #1 yesterday but today DC have dropped a whole lot more on us with another look at all the latest relaunch covers and yes it seems this is now being called a relaunch and not a reboot. So far I'd say these are looking very 90's, all extra pipping in the suits, new belts, funky boots, bigger claws and trousers for the ladies. We'll still have to wait and see how they turn out but at the moment I'm looking forward to getting me some Savage Hawkman action, hell yeah!

The DC Reboot/Relaunch: Sidekick's Viewpoint Megablog *UPDATED*02/06/11

As I gave my opinion on the DC reboot and day and date digital debate yesterday, and we also heard from some of the industries biggest names via Twitter I thought it'd be a good idea to try to capture the mood of the rest of the comic book community. What we have here is a megablog post collating as many opinions of comic book fans, writers, artists and of course Sidekicks as I could muster up:
Mike Harding AKA @mikeybumchin, Sidekickcast guest-host and contributor to the Sidekick Blog.
Well following a read of the initial article i think that as Rob Williams said, not bothered too much, as long as the stories are good. If they decided to reboot the characters then that would be a different thing entirely. I just hope that they aren't doing an "ulitmate" version which brings all the heroes origins into the now as that would ruin certain titles like Batman, Superman and Justice Society as these are legacy characters that have influenced other heroes. If they do erase all that has gone before then I think they may run the risk of losing a lot of readers, who, have heavily invested both time, and money in some of their larger projects (52, the numerous company wide crossovers). I have always been critical for the excessive amount of continuity driven stories (not just in DC but also in Marvel) and DC's lack of referencing to the past; but this is not the way to deal with that.
The initial title launch of Justice League by Johns and lee should be good as both writer and artist are among some of my favorite individuals in the comic industry.
Regarding the idea of cutting down piracy, I don't think this will be the case as people will still illegally download stuff, due to various factors.
Will be interesting to see how this develops, and I'm not surprised that they are doing this again, as it seems to be something they feel that they can do every so often.

As someone who now only buys trades and when he does it isn't either of the two big boys, I couldn't give a shit ...
Only joking, now for the serious bit - I think it's great for the industry, if it gets people buying comics it can only be good particularly if this $2.99 for a year rumour is true. It won't be a complete reboot either i.e. not right, right back to origins but go back to the characters younger days with different customers to take them in a different direction - I for one will watch with intrigue and hope the writing grabs you by the b***s
DC Comics Goes Back to #1! With Day & Date Digital Release

So here's the news, direct for from DC's The Source blog, carry on past the jump for the Sidekick reaction and more:
"This year, change is in the air at DC Comics.
On Wednesday, August 31st, DC Comics will launch a historic renumbering of the entire DC Universe line of comic books with 52 first issues, including the release of JUSTICE LEAGUE by NEW YORK TIMES bestselling writer and DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns and bestselling artist and DC Comics Co-Publisher Jim Lee. Together they will offer a contemporary take on the origin of the comic book industry’s premier superhero team.
In the hours, days and weeks to come, we’ll have more news about the other titles. Tomorrow, we’ll hear from Co-Publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee about this momentous occasion. Keep checking THE SOURCE for updates about the other first issues.

FCBD 2011 Reviews: Green Lantern Special Edition Plus Flashpoint

Every year we have Free Comic Book Day (it does what it says on the tin, gives comic books away for free) and every year I say I'm going to make an extra special effort and review all the free comic books, just to see what each compnay is offering it's customers, old and new, and every year I fail. Well not this year Sidekicks, as I was able to get my hands on each and every free comic book out there and through the week will be giving you a no fuss, no muss FCDB 2011 review. First up; DC with Green Lantern and a little bit of Flashpoint thrown in for god measure.
Let those who worship evil's might, view this mock Green Lantern trailer in fright
In brightest day, in blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight
Let those who worship evil's might,
Beware my power... Green Lantern's light!

Okay I have to come clean here I've never really been a huge Green Lantern fan. I've got the t-shirt, a couple of the books and I've enjoyed the
various animated incarnations in shows like Justice League and New Frontier but other than that I've been distinctly un-green. That all changed last week when I started to tuck into The Sinestro Corps War hardbacks loaned to me @ Bristol Expo by Sidekickcast listener, forum user and all around good guy Mr Cola AKA Gareth. The idea is we recommend books to our listeners and in return they offer their own recommendations in return, it's a nice system you've always got a Sidekick watching your back. Now that I've finished the books I am a total convert, Geoff Johns, Dave Gibbons and Peter Tomasi have crafted a fine story that even a noob like me can follow and enjoy. There were parts of the story I didn't fully appreciate due to my Lantern virginity but all that has done is fuelled my desire to find out all I can concerning anything Green and Lantern-shaped. I thought I'd share a couple of videos I found.
My first find was this most excellent fan-made trailer for a Green Lantern movie starring Nathan Fillion as Hal Jordan. It's rather impressive in not only how good this trailer looks but the shear number of films this guy has used to craft it, my hat is tipped Mr Jaron Pitts. It's a real shame that Captain Tight-Pants himself Nathan Fillion has already been considered and rejected as the choice for Hal Jordan in the real upcoming due to his age but at least he got a kick out of this trailer as he commented on Twitter last week.
Geoff Johns brings the Legion to Smallville
I'm sure by now everyone has heard that Geoff Johns writer of Green Lantern, JSA, Action Comics and all around saviour of DC Comics has written an episode of Warner Brother's Smallville which features the Legion of Superheroes. I gave up on Smallville about two series ago and don't really miss it if I'm honest but this has me intrigued. The chance to see Saturn Girl, Lightning Lad and Cosmic Boy on the screen is just too good to miss. So check out this trailer for the episode in question and enjoy.
The Legion of Superheroes are are a superhero team from the 30th and 31st centuries (1000 years from the present), but have recurring connections via time travel with the present. In particular their formation and codes of conduct were inspired by the actions of our very own Superman.
The team was closely associated with the original Superboy and was first portrayed as a group of time travelers who frequently visited (or were visited by) the young hero destined to become Superman.
