FCBD 2011 Reviews: Green Lantern Special Edition Plus Flashpoint

Every year we have Free Comic Book Day (it does what it says on the tin, gives comic books away for free) and every year I say I'm going to make an extra special effort and review all the free comic books, just to see what each compnay is offering it's customers, old and new, and every year I fail. Well not this year Sidekicks, as I was able to get my hands on each and every free comic book out there and through the week will be giving you a no fuss, no muss FCDB 2011 review. First up; DC with Green Lantern and a little bit of Flashpoint thrown in for god measure.

Top Cow are giving away free comics

In a move of laziness and absolute agreement with this promotion I'm going to let this Top Cow press release speak for itself. All I have to say is well done Top Cow, Sidekick Comics salutes you.
Top Cow Productions, Inc. announced last week that it will launch the Let Us Win YOU Over initiative in February 2009 that will see the publisher distribute thousands of free comics a month to new readers through participating retailers across the United States and Canada.
Over the course of the yearlong promotion, Top Cow will send 200 free comics each to 25 comic book stores per month (a total of 5,000 free comics per month). Each month, a different set of stores, each month a different free comic. The stores will be spread out geographically and demographically.
Combined with the books it plans to give away during Free Comic Book Day on May 2, 2009 and the many books Top Cow gives away at various conventions across the country, the publisher stands to give away up to 200,000 free comics during the year.
Like Warren Ellis? Like Freak Angels? Like Free Comics? Show the Love!

Anyone that has been reading the Sidekick Comics blogs will know that I'm not one for getting on my soapbox and going all militant on your asses...until now. Freak Angels, published by Avatar Press, written by Warren Ellis, with art duties handled by Paul Duffield is a steam punk-esque story, set in a dystopian future and even better than that, it's free to view on the web. The story is now on episode 34 but has just been released as a collected edition available in stores now.
I started reading this series online and was enjoying it greatly but with all my other comics to read and the podcast to work on, it fell (as many things do) by the wayside. I do however support this project 100% and will be ordering the collected edition this week and I urge you fellow sidekicks to do the same, you'll get a great story with fine art and you could be helping to save and move the comic industry in a new and exciting direction.
