My Eagle Awards Nods

Hope 'n' Change

First order of business, the above cartoon, nothing to do with the Eagle awards I just thought it was funny ok? - You can find Hope 'n' Change by clicking on the cartoon strip.

You may disagree with some of my nominations for The Eagle Awards this year but choices had to be made, mine were made based on what I have personally read and experienced in 2010. Fundamentally The Eagles are beautifully flawed as they allow those nominating to add to the list, this is both to it's credit and it's curse as you will see:

Some of these selections are bound to be disqualified mostly due to ineligibility, those that I feel may be marked as such will have the word FAIL written after them.

Q1: Favourite Newcomer Writer

Kieron Gillen

Newcomer writer? Really? The guy has been around longer than Old Spice but I thought, hey, why not? If Gillen hadn't been in this category the nod would've gone to Nick Spencer, I think.

27-29 MAY – EXCEL LONDON – ROYAL VICTORIA DOCK

Now there are two comic book awards ceremonies (The Eagle Awards and the Stan Lee Awards whatever they are?;-))in the UK it's even more important that if you wish to continue to support the Eagle Awards you get your ass over to the site and get your nominations in. The new nominations launch Friday 4th February and run until 7th March, I'll be posting my nominations on this very site so you can all see just how shallow and badly read I truly am.
The top five nominations in each section will then be verified and voting gets underway on 14th March – let us know who you want to see honoured on the big night of 27th May at the London MCM Expo by picking your favourites of 2010.

MCM Expo '10 in 10

London MCM Expo 2010

So much went on at this weekend's MCM Expo at London Dockland's Excel centre that the only way to sum it up was to make some kind of list. So here are my ten most memorable thoughts/moments/things I learnt from the weekend:

1. Nearly 50,000 people went through the doors of the London MCM Expo this year; a pretty titanic effort by anyone's standards and easily making it the UK's biggest comic con, are you listening Mr Millar.

Move Along!

2. There are cosplayers out there for everything, from Resident Evil to Naruto to Bannanas in Pyjamas. You name it and somebody out there will dress up like it and tredge down to the Excel centre to display their chosen ploomage. Don't believe me? Fellow Sidekick, Ned will be along soon with his rundown of all the cosplay action.

Have you voted? Eagle Awards Nonminations 2010

Eagle Awards Nonminations 2010

So after yesterday's Eagle Awards panel at the Bristol International Comic and Small Press Expo (BICSPE) the nominations for this year's awards have been announced in full. I've voted and if you'd like to just click here.

As always it's a very mixed bunch with some very odd choices. The newcomer category seems to be full of writer's and artists that I certainly wouldn't consider to be newcomers. A nod for Captain Britain and MI:13 but nothing for Paul Cornell in the favourite writer category seems a travesty. Favourite publishers is rather narrow, missing out at least a couple of the companies out there doing some really good work, no Avatar Press, Dynamite Entertainment, Top Shelf or Boom! Studios. It seems also that given the increasing number of UK publishers, either a favourite UK or even European publisher category would be a good idea. Also as there's a favourite website category would it be cheeky to ask for a favourite podcast category now?

Despite all my bitching about the nominations I do think any celebration of the talent behind comic books should be welcomed, it's good to see the Eagle Awards back and I wish all the nominees the best of luck.
