Behind the Masks - Catwoman

Since I’ve been writing this column, it’s been all about the male superheroes and villains. There have been pictures of actors such as James Marsters, Chris Hemsworth and Michael Rosenbaum for the ladies (and fellow Sidekick, Joe Glass) to swoon over. Many of the votes I’ve received from female fans for their favourite actors to play the characters I’ve covered have ended with words to the effect of “because he’s hot.” Sorry ladies, it’s true.
Well, this week, it’s the mens turn, as I turn Behind the Masks to possibly the sexiest lady to ever grace the printed page, and take a look at the actresses who have portrayed Catwoman.
This column was probably the toughest one for me to write yet. It turns out there have been a lot of great Catwomen over the years, and there are some shocking omissions from this list. Those who know me well enough will be surprised at the absence of Eliza Dushku, but with Batman: Year One not having been released yet, I couldn’t really include her by my own rules. Gina Gershon’s turn in The Batman was out of the running fairly early on, but it was only as I started actually writing that I dropped Eartha Kitt from the list. Likewise, the top five itself kept on changing, with my top two constantly swapping positions, even halfway through writing the entry for them, as did my three and four. Obviously, Halle Berry’s awful, awful version did not make the cut.
The votes for your favourite Catwoman were also close, which wasn’t much help for me, but in the end Michelle Pfeiffer just (by one vote) edged out Julie Newmar for the top spot, with one vote telling me that “Michelle Pfeiffer is how you spell M’rowr”. So, who tops my list?
DCNu Reviews: Catwoman #1 - Geeky Storm in a Teacup

So today's storm in the geeky teacup seems to be the new Catwoman comic. Its disgusting! Its pornographic! Its sexist! You know, the usual bullshit whenever a comic dares to come out with a female lead who doesn't look like a librarian. Well, like a stereotypical librarian. The one librarian I know is pretty foxy (hello Whittle).
So even though it wasn't on my must read list from DC's new 52 I picked this up and read it. Bit bad of me as a comic nerd I know... actually READING a comic before giving my opinion on it, but what the hell.
Lets go through the main complaints I've seen online. Gotta spoil a bit to explain, but before we do, lets get one thing straight. Im not some sad bastard wanking off over drawings. That said I see nothing wrong with a bit of T&A in comics. You ever read the original Rocketeer comics? There's some STUNNING art in there that looks like it should be on the side of a World War 2 Bomber plane. Same as I have no problem with Batman's six pack or The Flash basically being a naked Olympic swimmer sprayed red. Comic characters dont have to look like real people. If they do then you get Alex Ross books which for me lose a lot of the magic of comics. Give me stylised characters over photo real cosplayers any day. Anyway, lets get into it...
Coming Back to Comics: Why No Super Heroine Comics on my List?

So with all new releases coming out and with me getting back into reading/collecting comics I have been spending a lot of time looking at titles which are out or coming out, along with revisiting the ones I used to collect to see if they still did it for me and I noticed something:
From the age of 12 (1990) until I was 23 (2001) and for the last 3 months, I have never collected a comic based around a female character, not one.
Batman: Arkham City Update

Battle, ambush and race your way to leaderboard domination in bigger and improved challenge mode.
The latest news from Rocksteady Studios is that Batman Arkham City will be five times bigger than Arkhum Asylum, so no suprises to fans that the roaming areas have been expanded to give more character freedom and cure one of the few faults of the original game Arkham Asylum, one of the best gaming titles to be released to date.
Great news is the return of the challenge mode, after you complete the campaign mode and collect all the Riddler trophies, a more expansive and competitive challenge mode awaits to play as either the Batman, Catwoman or Robin and we all give thanks to the developers for including these playable characters free of charge and resisting the temptation to charge us for the extra content. I wouldn’t be surprised if a villains pack was available to download some time after release to compete in challenge mode but that’s just me thinking of how they’re going to hit our pockets and keep the game fresh during some really major release titles in the months after this baby hits shelves, pure speculation on my behalf.

It's been exciting times with all this DC relaunch news, exciting but exhausting, being on this side of the pond makes it difficult to keep up but here is a collection of all the covers for the relauched Bat Family books with a little bit of comment by me when I think it's needed.

Detective Comics #1 - Tony Daniel
Writing and drawing from Tony Daniel again, he's done it well before just after Batman: RIP, tough job but if anyone can do it, he can. Shame Detective is going back to #1 but I'm certainly not as cut up about it as some fanboys, it just a number dudes.

Fans were promised an image from the film on this site if they tweeted #thefirerises. The image is a composite picture of all those twitter users profiles, rearranged and shaded to show Tom Hardy as Bane (shown above).

Earlier in the year at Wondercon DC animation god, Bruce Timm, announced that the next animated Batman project they were working on was Frank Miller's Batman: Year One. Yesterday, The Hollywood Reporter not only unveiled these two shots from the production but also announced who would be voicing the various characters; Bryan Cranston as Jim Gordon, Ben McKenzie as a youngish Bruce Wayne/Proto-Batman, Eliza Dushku as Selina Kyle/Catwoman and Katee Sackhoff as Detective Sarah Essen.
