Coming Back to Comics: Be Positive

by Alex Giles Email

In the last few months with everything that has been happening in the comic book world I have noticed something, I have noticed that as in life so many people are negative and love to put down a comic, a character or a story line much more than they will praise it or even just say it was ok.

I've come to believe that the majority of comic book fans (not me or the people I talk comics with) are looking for something to be negative with, in fact there are a few who rip into everything from Marvel and DC yet praise all from Image or Dark horse which is clearly just because they don’t see them as mainstream so must be “cool”.

These comic book fans annoy me and I don’t mind telling you that at all, they are as bad as the music Nazi’s we all know, who love an underground band until they sign a major record deal and are then suddenly sell outs and crap, even though the first album is the same songs they were singing happily along too when no one knew who they were.

Follow up:

I know people around the world in general can be like this, you just have to watch the news or read a paper to see how overburdened we all are by the dark, negative, bad things that are taking place in the world, hell I won't even let my partner go to shops if it's dark, just out of paranoia of something bad happening too her and isn’t this why we look for escapes from reality?

Isn’t this partly why we read comics?

Isn’t this why we want to escape to a fictional land?

To do this we must first WANT to escape to this place and I'll tell you now; some people don’t. They are quite happy to automatically pick up a comic with “This is written by Perez so is going to be crap” or “Can’t believe they have changed the look of Harley Quinn, this is going to suck”.

These people haven’t even opened the comic and have started to write it off already, I don’t get it. There is so much negativity around comics even though Marvel have got Daredevil, Hulk, Captain America all restarted lately, Schism now leading to the X men split. Image have got Witch Doctor which is phenomenal and Luther Strode which I read last night and is amazing, not to mention a small thing happening at DC with 52 new monthlies, some miniseries and a whole new DC universe changed, yet so many people are picking up all the negatives.

I realise that it’s always easier to be negative than positive and I myself am actually quite bad at this BUT when not too many people were talking about comics, a magority of fans were saying “The companies need to try something to get interest” and “Comic books are dying and nothing can be done”, yet now that both companies are trying stuff and along with digital actually taking off, the SAME people are all “I'll never buy DC again this is uncalled for!!!!” or “Why can't these companies just keep things as they are, stop messing with my characters?!”.

It's laziness.

If you put the effort to have a positive mind you will be glad you did, trust the companies, because I am pretty sure that DC, Marvel, Image and the like want the comic book industry to succeed a whole lot more than you, so stop getting at them all the time and let them try to drum up interest and seek other avenues so they can continue.

DON’T be negative about a comic before you have even picked it up. I hate to say the old saying “Never judge a book by its cover” but it’s coming out.

Give comics a chance by not judging them before even reading and when you purchase the comic be positive and WANT to like it, as it may surprise you and be good.

When it comes to comics I am positive, I see the good in them (should probably be like this in life) please be the same.

Constructive criticism is good, but ripping into something just for the sake of it is bad.

This was written as an article but if you want to call it a plea, a rant, a message, an appeal, whatever, just takes note and BE POSITIVE.

If you can't get excited about the things happening at DC and Marvel just now or about some of titles coming out of Image then why are you here?

Thanks for reading

Hear Hear!
Or is it Here Here? Think its the first one.

Anyway, with you 100%. Please add to this people who watch Doctor Who every week just to slag it off and people who bitched about Transformers 1 and 2 and will STILL watch the third with a prior "Well lets see how shit THIS one is..." tweet.
