My Eagle Awards Nods

Hope 'n' Change

First order of business, the above cartoon, nothing to do with the Eagle awards I just thought it was funny ok? - You can find Hope 'n' Change by clicking on the cartoon strip.

You may disagree with some of my nominations for The Eagle Awards this year but choices had to be made, mine were made based on what I have personally read and experienced in 2010. Fundamentally The Eagles are beautifully flawed as they allow those nominating to add to the list, this is both to it's credit and it's curse as you will see:

Some of these selections are bound to be disqualified mostly due to ineligibility, those that I feel may be marked as such will have the word FAIL written after them.

Q1: Favourite Newcomer Writer

Kieron Gillen

Newcomer writer? Really? The guy has been around longer than Old Spice but I thought, hey, why not? If Gillen hadn't been in this category the nod would've gone to Nick Spencer, I think.

Follow up:

Q2: Favourite Newcomer Artist

Adam Brockbank

Not seen too many new artists this year but Adam's work on Mezolith has blown me away.

Q3: Favourite Writer

Grant Morrison

I chose him in our 619 Review of 2010 show, so of course I had to carry that over. His work on the Batman books this year has been out of this world, quite literally at times.

Q4: Favourite Writer/Artist

Dean Haspiel

I was a little stuck here to be honest and then I saw Dean's name, don't know what he's done this but I love his work on Bored to Death and I missed the chance to give him some love for The Alcoholic. FAIL

Q5: Favourite Artist: Pencils

Chris Bachalo

I always vote for Bachalo if he's on the list, he was on the list so I chose him. All time favourite artist without a doubt, his work made me love comic book art rather than being something extra to the story.

Q6: Favourite Artist: Inks

Charlie Adlard

Another toughie, what I know about inking you could write on the back of a fag packet.

Q7: Favourite Artist: Fully-Painted Artwork

Marco Djurdevic

The darker, the better.

Q8: Favourite Colourist

Frazer Irving

I wanted to make sure Irving was represented, his art has been outstanding, especially his work on The Return of Bruce Wayne. Still don't know whether he should be up for best colourist though, doesn't seem fair to full-time colourists.

Q9: Favourite Letterer

Richard Starkings

Again lettering is not my thing but I met Richard a couple of times last year and found him to be a terribly nice bloke so I thought I'd give him and the now legendary comic craft a nod.

Q10: Favourite Editor

Nate Cosby

I like his tweets. How the hell does one choose an editor? For all I know they may've done Sweet F.A!

Q11: Favourite Publisher

IMAGE

Easily some of the most original, interesting and inventive books have been coming from Image this year, nobody else even comes close.

Q12: Favourite American Comicbook: Colour

Batman & Robin

I like to keep it consistent.

Q13: Favourite American Comicbook: Black and White

The Walking Dead

Not the best year for The Walking Dead comic if you ask me but still miles better than most books out there.

Q14: Favourite British Comicbook: Colour

Cancertown

This book has been out for ages, this has to be a mistake, I loved it though. FAIL

Q15: Favourite British Comicbook: Black and White

GONZO: A Graphic Biogarphy of Hunter S. Thopmson

I'm a big Hunter S. Thompson fan, the guys at Self Made Hero gave me a review copy and it's the only British black and white comic book I read.

Q16: Favourite New Comicbook

Morning Glories

Have you read it? You really should, it's like Buffy on acid.

Q17: Favourite Manga

Dragon Heir: Reborn

This was the only 'new' manga I read in 2010 and it's bloody good.

Q18: Favourite European Comicbook

No answer

I don't read a lot of European comics but I intend to change that over the next year, so what out next year's nomination, you 'aving it!

Q19: Favourite Web-Based Comic

Axe Cop

Only discovered this once the print version had come out thanks to Rich McAuliffe but it's genius. The writer is 5 years old, I shit you not.

Q20: Favourite 2010 Single Story

The Bulletproof Coffin

Only place I could see to put the best book I read in 2010, Hine and Kane produce a great satirical story that manages to ape both the old and nu schools of comic books.

Q21: Favourite 2010 Continued Story

Batman and Robin

See...told you I was consistent.

Q22: Favourite 2010 Cover

The Boys #48

Had to add this one myself but it is so iconic and so perfectly fits with The Boys that it has to be in there.

Q23: Favourite 2010 Original Graphic Novel

Scott Pilgrim vol.6

Boring choice I know but in terms of OGNs, it was the newest I have read and it was pretty monumental.

Q24: Favourite 2010 Reprint Compilation

Battlefields

If you're not reading this book then you must be either a commie or a Nazi. Which is it then?! Huh?!

Q25: Favourite Comics-Related Book

75 Years of DC

I couldn't afford this book, it was £150 but any book that has it's own handles because it's so bloody big is ok by me. I've heard it's pretty good too.

Q26: Favourite Comics-Related Movie or TV Show

The Walking Dead

The comic book may have had a bit of rubbish year in terms of story but the TV show knocked it out of the park without a doubt. Cannot wait to see what they hit us with next.

Q27: Favourite Comics-Related Website

The Sidekick Comics blog

Come on, I had to nominate this site, nobody else was gonna do it...oh you would have? Now I feel stupid. If I hadn't used the nomination to shamelessly put this very site forward I would've gone for our good buddies Geek Syndicate.

Q28: Favourite Magazine about Comics

No answer given.

I only read CLiNT and that doesn't count, not in my book anyways.

Q29: Roll of Honour

Emma Vieceli

Tony Lee was added to the roll last year and I thought it was time to give something else back to the British creators, especially one who has worked so tirelessly to promote comics. I'm not sure who is already on the roll and if they're on the roll then they can't go on again, so Emma if you're on the roll, sorry.

There you have it my choices, let the abuse begin.

Good work on the full disclosure here Bones. And also the multiple use of the word "FAIL" in bold and in caps.

The Sidekick Comics blog just wouldn't be considered as a serious Comics-Related Website without that kind of thing.

It's a serious concern, a lot of those nominations will be for nothing because someone, somewhere is too lazy to look up some dates.
